Hello, my name is Sydney White. I’m a sophomore Biology and English Literature major at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. I’m from Lombard, a suburb of Chicago. I did not become involved with FACE AIDS until this year when, as luck would have it, I had the opportunity to get to know two of the riders from last year: Vadim Kogan and Michael Henry. I first heard about FACE AIDS, the deeply ingrained stigma against people with HIV/AIDS, and the irreconcilable disparity between the privileged and the underserved, and inequality of medical care in South Africa (and here in the States) through Michael. He was one of the residents in my building and spoke openly and enthusiastically about the Ride and FACE AIDS. I sat in the audience when Michael and Vadim gave a presentation on their experiences with FACE AIDS. By the end of that presentation, I knew, for the first time in my life, that I could help make a difference in the fight against Aids. Whether that contribution would be as simple as helping plan events on campus, educating my residents, and helping fundraise or as significant as riding across the country - well, that was up in the air.
Six short months later, I’m lucky enough to have an opportunity ride across the United States and represent an organization that I am incredibly proud to be affiliated with, FACE AIDS. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to learn, to help others realize the importance of the work of Partners in Heath and FACE AIDS, see the country, test myself, but most importantly, lend my time and myself to making a difference. Michael told me during my interview that, “Riding across the US is a little bit crazy. But that’s what we need.” To be honest, it’s really crazy: 3 months, 4,000 miles, $5,000, countless letters and people. Crazy. Frightening. Unfathomable. Thrilling. But there is nothing I would rather be doing with my time, and I cannot wait to share the experience with the other riders, and with you. Via blog or via email at swhite2@iwu.edu, feel free to contact me with thoughts, ideas, or questions. Wish us luck!
