Domestic violence affects everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or educational background.
This project directly funds two Becky’s Fund youth initiatives: the “Becoming Your Own Heroine: Lessons in Self-Empowerment and Dating Violence” and the “Young Men’s Mentorship Program”. Targeting the highest risk youths in the D.C. metro area, the initiatives provide participants with education about dating and domestic violence. As a result, youth have the tools to create healthy, productive relationships, and learn how to teach others by example about conflict resolution, allowing them to build lasting and healthy relationships for the future.
The “Becoming Your Own Heroine” workshops target young women between 16 and 24 - people in the highest risk category for violence committed by an intimate partner. Day long workshops are designed to empower and educate young women on the topics of dating violence, bullying and self-empowerment and include a 25-page curriculum along with interpretive dance, crafts, role-playing and lunch.
The “Young Men’s Mentorship” program aims to provide an alternative, positive vision of masculinity for male youth in D.C. It pairs DC youth with positive role models in fields such as business, sports, art and law and designs activities through which the mentors and young men build trust and strong relationships. The mentoring program lasts 6 weeks during with mentors and mentees each participate in 5 outings across the Greater Washington DC area. Venues for outings include baseball games, bowling outings and museum trips. At the culmination of the program, mentors and mentees serve pizza together at California Pizza Kitchen in January 2012.
Becky’s Fund youth initiatives will create cohorts of youth who possess the knowledge, language and confidence to not only discuss the prevalence of violence with their peers, but also the tools to intervene in, and seek help for situations of dating violence.
The Young Men’s Mentorship program will provide an alternative, positive vision of masculinity for male youth in the area.
The messages of empowerment and non-violence given to D.C. area youth will not only diminish existing violence, but also help create a generation who can build and promote healthy relationships.
Executive Director, Becky Lee, with staff, presents workshops where different lessons are taught about self-empowerment and dating violence. Topics include self-defense taught by SWAT DC Cop, Tim Dumantt, conflict resolution by Dance for Peace, healthy relationships and self-esteem building.
For the Young Men’s Mentorship program, Becky’s Fund matches up young men with men in the community who are role models for the youth and provides activities for the pairs to interact.
