This project will repair and deepen the primary well in Bitiyari, allowing the well to recharge with fresh ground water. A deeper well will also allow for more water to be captured during the monsoon season and saved for use during the dry season.
Repair of the Bitiyari well will greatly improve the community's access to drinking and cleaning water, and alleviate the strain put on existing water resources. A parapet safety barrier and a pulley system will also be constructed in order to ensure women and children are able to safely collect water from the well.
The current well will be cleaned prior to repairing and reconstructing the broke walls with reinforced concrete-cement blocks. The well walls will be raised an additional three feet from ground level and a parapet safety net will be constructed over the top to improve safety measures for water collection.
The well repair also includes the addition of four pulley systems to ensure that women can procure water with ease, and a cement platform will also be built around the base of the well to prevent women from slipping while using the pulleys.
Bitiyari does not have plumbing, irrigation, or other infrastructure neccessary to provide community members with access to water. Water used for drinking, cooking, agriculture, and cleaning rely on the monsoon rains. As a result, recent droughts and increasingly-shorter monsoon season have created a water shortage problem for the Bitiyari community.
Local workers from the Bitiyari community will be hired to complete the construction and masonry required for the well repair.

About Me: We are avid travelers. Jennifer was fortunate to live in Morocco during her high school years. This experience enabled her to learn first-hand what it is like to live without so many of the comforts we take for granted daily in the United States -- one of those comforts being easy access to clean water. Her time in Morocco and many of the travels we have taken since to Africa and Asia have instilled in us a desire to give back and help many of the communities we have visited continue to prosper. We are excited to be in a position to help the community in Bitiyari by raising money to grant them easier access to a basic need - water.
