Project Summary

The well in Alva village is over 40 years old. While it provides a close and clean source of water for the 250 inhabitants, it is in disrepair and dangerous to use. There is no raised platform surrounding the well so during the monsoon the well is underwater. This pollutes the drinking water and causing health problems. Also, while adults know where the well is and can avoid it, it is very dangerous for children and animals who risk falling in.

This project funds the repair of the well in Alva village. Repairs include reinforcing the walls and building a raised platform. A pulley system will also be built. This will make it less tiring for the women get water from the well.

Alva is a relatively new village. It was established about 80 years ago as people migrated from existing villages in search of work. Most people work as agricultural day laborers on the surrounding farms. The average wage is Rps 50 ($1 per day).

With training from SEWA villagers have also begun to cultivate their own kitchen gardens using waste water from washing and cooking.

In addition, during the monsoon the well will no longer be covered by water. This has two benefits for the whole village. Firstly the drinking water will not be polluted giving health beenfits. Secondly, the well will be clearly visible, reducing the risks to children and animals who would not have known where it was.
