April 2010 Field Report

Posted: 05/07/2010

Children of Vietnam is happy to report that construction has begun on 5 of the 6 toilets supported by Tad’s project! Check out the pictures of the progress that has already been made on the families’ new facilities:

The Dung Family (Household of 3)

Before Tad’s project, Ms. Dung, a farmer, and her two children (ages 15 and 10) relied on a neighbor’s bathroom when they needed to use the restroom. They are looking forward to construction being completed on their new toilet.

The Thom Family (Household of 2)

Ms. Thom and her ten-year old son rely on the limited wages she earns as a farmer to meet their basic needs. Prior to becoming project beneficiaries, this family only had access to a public toilet located at a nearby irrigation canal. This picture is of Ms. Thom and her son inside their home.

The Công Family (Household of 4)

Mr. Công (age 30) and his wife (age 28) are the parents of two young children (ages 3 and 6). This family faces grave challenges. Neither Mr. nor Mrs. Công have stable employment and all four family members struggle with recurring illnesses. Up to this point, Mr. Công and his family have only had access to the restroom at his mother’s neighboring home. All 4 family members are eagerly awaiting having their own toilet.

*Please note, the Côngs were recently added as a project beneficiaries. After consulting with local government officials and Mrs. Bieu, a disabled single mother, it was determined that the Bieu home is in such disrepair that it needs to be completely rebuilt. Children of Vietnam is currently working to identify a new donor to assist the Bieus with this renovation.

The Trung Family (Household of 5)

Mr. and Mrs. Trung and their three children (ages 9, 7, and 1) rely on the little income the parents earn as farmers. All five family members have been forced to rely on the toilet at their grandparents’ home, but this facility has deteriorated and can no longer be used by such a large group of people. The Trungs are excited by the work that has already been completed on their new toilet.

The Anh Family (Household of 4)

Mrs. Anh and her three children (ages 15, 13, and 8) have struggled since her husband’s death. Mrs. Anh works in Khue Dong’s fields to support her family so that all three children can continue to attend school. Unfortunately, the limited income she earns is not adequate to repair her home’s toilet that collapsed during a typhoon; Tad’s project has ensured that the necessary repairs have been made to the facility. Check out this picture of Mrs. Anh and her daughter standing outside the construction site!

The Can Family (Household of 5)
Mrs. Can has been the sole caregiver for her four school-age children (ages 23, 21, 17, and 11) since their father’s death. Since the family’s home has no restroom, all five people have been forced to use the bushes at the back of their house as a toilet. The new facility under construction at the family’s home will rectify this situation and significantly improve their lives.
