Coprodeli is working to improve the quality of life in the impoverished district of Subtanjalla, but extreme poverty, unemployment, and cultural biases have placed many, especially women and children, at risk for domestic violence. As Coprodeli has observed first hand, this abuse continues to prevent entire families from accessing the basic services they need to better their lives.
This project will fund the salaries of a psychologist and trained social worker and provide them with the necessary materials to run a 12-month domestic violence prevention program at Coprodeli’s San Antonio Education Center. The program will provide classes, workshops, and counseling to ensure the center’s 150 at-risk students and their families receive the education and training they need to prevent and intervene in cases of intrafamily abuse. Become the Citizen Philanthropist for this project and partner with the residents of Subtanjalla to protect their community from the ongoing tragedy of domestic violence.
This project will provide the necessary resources to establish a 12-month domestic violence prevention program at the San Antonio Education Center. A psychologist and volunteer social worker will be selected and equipped with the materials to initiate a three-pronged approach to address domestic violence among the center's families. New courses addressing intrafamily abuse will be integrated into the San Antonio Education Center's curriculum. A similar educational program will also be offered to neglected, abandoned, or abused children participating in Coprodeli's youth outreach program. In addition, parents of San Antonio students will be offered an orientation followed by series of workshops directed at identifying and properly coping with domestic violence.
These two branches of the program will also identify families coping with or predisposed to domestic violence. Affected individuals will subsequently receive counseling and when necessary, periodic house visits. In extreme cases, the program's psychologist and social worker will also refer families to shelters, legal counsel or more advanced support resources to ensure they can recover in a protected environment.
Socioeconomic factors including poverty, unemployment, underdevelopment, political violence, internal migration, and substance abuse affect significant segments of Subtanjalla's population. As a result of these conditions, the region's families and larger community also cope with rising cases of crime, mental illness, and discrimination. Together, these issues have made domestic violence a significant threat to Subtanjalla's families and community. Without the proper channels to identify and address it, intrafamily abuse will continue to leave victims in desperate situations with little hope.
The domestic violence prevention program will build upon the services and resources already offered by Coprodeli. A psychologist and social worker will be selected and complete specialized training to prepare them for implementing the program's three components. Having done this, the psychologist and social worker will work closely with the administration and staff of San Antonio Education Center to develop and begin the student courses. This will be followed by the sessions offered to parents and serve as the basis for counseling and outreach efforts. Throughout the development and implementation of the program, Coprodeli will oversee and carefully observe its running and results.
