This project will provide for HIV testing kits for one week at Mpilonhle’s mobile health units (a Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project sponsored initiative). The mobile units provide HIV testing to students in schools, as well as serving community members when school is not in session.
Approximately 240 people in KwaZulu-Natal receive testing (12,500/year) from Mpilonhle’s mobile health units. Testing kits are a crucial element of the Mpilonhle program, as it is essential that people know their HIV status, so they can get treatment if they are infected, or reassure themselves and protect themselves from being infected if they are HIV negative.
Funds raised by this project will provide HIV test kits for Mpilonhle mobile units (approximately 240 test kits). Each testing kit costs approximately $4.50. In addition to HIV testing, individuals have access to the primary healthcare nurse and social worker or psychologist that travel with the each of the mobile units. The mobile units also provide student ID cards, computer training, and other education enrichment opportunities to the communities they visit.
HIV testing is a crucial element of Mpilonhle’s program, as it is essential that people know their HIV status, so they can get treatment if they are infected, or reassure themselves and protect themselves from being infected if they are HIV negative. The presence of the mobile units also allow for individuals to receive computer training, opening up occupational prospects in an area where many are unemployed.
This awareness raising and fundraising campaign is led by students at Soka University of America who, as part of their “learning cluster,” are doing academic research, fieldwork/outreach, and grassroots fundraising to contribute to ongoing work to prevent HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The students were connected with Mpilonhle and the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project by attending a working groups session at the Center for Living Peace in December 2010. In January 2011, they visited Mpilonhle on the ground in South Africa, and did actual fieldwork with the mobile units in KwaZulu-Natal. They presented their experience first hand upon returning home to Southern California, and have raised funds locally to send back to Mpilonhle.
