San Luis district is located in Peru's Cañete Province, a region that is still recovering from a 2007 earthquake that destroyed its infrastructure and left most of its residents homeless and impoverished. Despite the area's potential for development, little has been done improve conditions in the district. This has left the San Luis's single mothers and children with few options and little hope.
In response, Coprodeli has constructed and begun to operate the San Luis Education Center. It is intended to provide the district's children with a safe and comfortable learning environment where they can reach their full potential. This project will equip five recently constructed classrooms in the San Luis Education Center so that 160 additional pre-primary and primary level students can attend the school.
This project will fund the equipping of five classrooms at the San Luis Education Center. Tables or desks, chairs, bookshelves and whiteboards will be purchased from local suppliers and installed by local workers or parent volunteers. Teaching materials and basic sets of Peruvian textbooks will also be provided to students through this project.
The San Luis Education Center was built to address the decline in accessible education in Cañete following a 2007 earthquake that destroyed 78 schools and damaged 511 in the Ica Region. Construction for the San Luis Education Center began in 2008, and with help from parent and community volunteers, the school was able to open in March 2009.
Currently 300 students in pre-kindergarten through third grade attend San Luis. Some of their classes meet in rooms with provisional furniture such as long benches and tables made from scrap lumber. This project will properly equip 5 classrooms to improve three existing classrooms and create two new classrooms for a fourth and fifth grade.
The process of equipping the classrooms and monitoring their use will be carefully supervised by Coprodeli. Two new teachers will be hired to teach fourth and fifth grade. The construction and equipment installation required for every new classroom will provide jobs to local businesses and workers as well as volunteer opportunities for parents and other community members.
