Vaghaji-Na-Muvada village in rural Gujarat has no source of water. The village well dried up 5 years ago when large farmers drilled bore wells, lowering the water table. Instead women have to make up to 8 trips a day to the nearest water source, 2km from the village.
The roof rainwater harvesting systems provide the community with a sustainable solution to capture and store rainwater during the monsoon season. Rainwater will be collected through a gully system that is attached to the roof and empties into an underground water tank.
Each reinforced concrete water tank will also include a closed top to keep water clean and devoid debris and pollution,
This project funds the materials and construction for 8 rainwater harvesting systems in Vaghaji-Na-Muvada village. Each tank has a capacity of 5,000 litres and will provide clean drinking water for up to 10 people.
The systems and tanks will be constructed in the village. Tanks are built underground close to the house, with a pipe running from the roof. The rainwater is very pure, but in addition the first rains are used to clean the roof and tank, and the water is captured during the second rains. materials include cement, bricks, sand, metal and waterproofing.
The well in Vaghaji-Na-Muvada dried up 5 years ago when large farmers drilled bore wells nearby. The nearest water source is 2km away, and women currently make up to 8 trips a day to fetch the water they need for their families and animals.
This project will mean these women no longer have to walk for water and instead can work, bringing an important extra income for the family.
SEWA will order the materials required for construction of the systems and oversee the work.
