The Oregon-Costa Rica Partners of the Americas would like to send a container of used wheelchairs and medical equipment from Oregon to Costa Rica. These are wheelchairs no longer used by children in Oregon but will be used in Costa Rica. United Cerebral Palsy’s Wheels for Humanity rehabilitates the used chairs.
All funds will be used to pay for shipping the rehabilitated wheelchairs from the UCP facility in California to Costa Rica where they will be fitted to children with severe physical handicaps. These used chairs will not be reused in Oregon and would otherwise go to a landfill.
The Wheelchair Project of Oregon Partners of the Americas funds the shipping of used wheelchairs from the rehabilitation center in West Hollywood, Ca. to San Jose, Ca. It also pays the advertising and miscellaneous expenses of advertising for a “wheelchair roundup” in Portland, Oregon where families from around the state bring their used wheelchairs to be recycled. This roundup is held once a year to gather wheelchairs to ship to Costa Rica.
Severely physically handicapped children in rural Costa Rica must wait for up to three years for a wheelchair that is custom fit for their needs. This program recycles used wheelchairs from Oregon that would go to a landfill to get a wheelchair to these children who so desperately need them. They cannot leave the house without a wheelchair so their social development and schooling suffer.
A subcommittee of volunteers from Oregon Partners of the Americas organizes a “wheelchair roundup” to collect used wheelchairs.
An in-kind donations from FedEx will transport the wheelchairs from Oregon to the United Cerebral Palsy Wheels for Humanity warehouse in West Hollywood, CA where they are rehabilitated and fit to specific children in Costa Rica.
The wheelchairs are packed into a container and the $2,500 that this project raises will be combined with an existing grant of $2,500 to transport the wheelchairs to Costa Rica
The Costa Rica Partners of the Americas Chapter along with the Alajuela Lions Club will help identify children throughout Costa Rica who need wheelchairs
UCP volunteers custom fit the wheelchairs in Costa Rica to fit their new occupants

About Me: I'm Don Ruff, retired engineer and current president of Oregon Partners of the Americas. I have been involved with Partners since 1990. Thanks to the hundreds of people who volunteer for Oregon Partners every year, we host two different exchange visit groups, send teachers of English to Costa Rica, send a container of wheelchairs, have artists visting and many other thingsprojects. It's an exciting and fun group to be part of. While having all this fun, we are making a difference both here, in Oregon, and in Costa Rica.
