This project will repair and deepen 2 wells in Varkhadiya, giving families better access to drinking and cleaning water and alleviating the strain put on existing water resources. A parapet safety barrier and a pulley system will also be constructed in order to ensure women and children are able to safely collect water from the well. A deeper well will allow for more water to be stored during the monsoon season and saved for use during the dry season.
The project will repair one well by deepening it by 20-30 feet. This will allow for more water to be stored in the well during the monsoon season, making water available for drinking, cleaning and irrigation if excess water is available.
As water becomes more and more scarce, communities are beginning to migrate, leaving those left behind with fewer and fewer resources. Furthermore, clean water is needed for the manufacture of detergent and incense sticks to supplement the income of the poor women of the village.
Local engineers and masons will rent a machine to dig and blast the rock for repairing the existing well. Once the wells are complete, a wall and pulley will be constructed so the women will no longer have to walk down to the bottom to collect the water. Total construction time for each well is expected to be 2 to 3 months.
