Families of farmers in the rural village of Nam Son are often unable to meet their children’s needs. The time-consuming and arduous labor their fields require leave parents struggling to find a means of caring for their children during work hours.
There are no primary or secondary schools in Nam Son. Instead one inadequate room in the local meeting hall serves kindergarten students during half-day sessions. Unfortunately, this room lacks the space and equipment that are needed to accommodate all of the village’s impoverished children.
This project will fund the construction of a kindergarten facility that will ensure 40 young children have access to a safe and comfortable space where they can learn, grow, and achieve. Become a Citizen Philanthropist and partner with the families of Nam Song so that all of the village's young children can begin the academic careers equipped with the resources to improve their futures.
Funding will construct a new kindergarten facility that will be approximately 25 X 30 ft and accommodate up to 40 students. The facility will include:
• ceiling fans
• a proper lighting system
• indoor toilets and washrooms
• a small kitchen
• accommodations for children with disabilities including ramps, elevated washbasins, and wider doors
• a plastered brick wall to surround the building so that children are safe to play outside
• fast growing trees that will provide shade
The village of Nam Son lacks the educational facilities that are needed to ensure its youngest children are able to learn and grow in a safe environment. Currently, only morning kindergarten classes are offered and held in a small, borrowed room. These limitations sadly result in the current sessions being unable to accommodate all 40 of Nam Son's kindergarten-age children. Those who do not attend classes are cared for by a parent or older sibling, a necessity that either prevents a parent from working or forces a sibling to forego attending school.
Before construction begins, Children of Vietnam staff and local officials will:
• sign a memorandum of understanding that states Nam Son officials will maintain the new kindergarten, employ college-trained teaching staff, and cover future expenses for school supplies, furniture, electricity, and water.
• finalize the design and location of the kindergarten
Once preliminary work is completed, Children of Vietnam’s staff engineer will oversee the entire construction process, including:
• taking bids from contractors
• monitoring progress of the project
• and inspecting the construction quality
In addition, the residents of Nam Son have committed to contributing a minimum of 45 hours of labor to assist the kindergarten's construction to demonstrate their commitment to their children's proper education. Construction of the facility will also provide employment to 10–15 local laborers and masons.
