Machik's Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a unique enrichment program that offers Tibetan students from Chungba and other Tibetan rural areas a dynamic and stimulating learning environment for four weeks every summer. This one-of-a-kind program is a key part of Machik's success in its community-based education initiative in Chungba. Drawing on volunteers both from around the world and from urban areas such as Beijing, Shanghai and even Lhasa, the SEP has brought new languages, new resources and new technologies to rural Tibetan students since 2002.
Your support of the 2011 SEP will allow Machik to continue to offer this unique and valuable experience for Tibetan children from across the plateau. Support for this program will help to instill confidence, share global perspectives, and enrich the education of a new generation of remarkable Tibetan students.
This project will fund one student to attend the 2011 Machik Summer Enrichment Program for 4 weeks of intense enrichment activities by providing:
- Classes and instruction on English, Tibetan, math, science and a host of other subjects
- Room and board for the students
- Transportation to and from the SEP site for students
- Instructional field trips for students
Tibetans in the PRC are confronted with a number of extraordinary challenges that involve access to quality education and programs that value and cultivate Tibetan language and culture. Rural Tibetan students, many of whom come from subsistence farming and herding families, are in need of education that not only provides the basic skills needed to subsist in a changing world—Chinese, math and science proficiency—but that serves to support and enrich connections to Tibetan language, culture and history. Machik’s SEP was created to address these challenges with an innovative and dynamic curriculum.
Students will be selected from communities across the Tibetan plateau based on a set of criteria that aims to place students who stand to gain the most from the program, and not just the top performers.
At least 50% representation from girls.
Volunteer teachers are chosen through a rigorous application and interviewing process that begins in the winter of 2010.

About Me: In the summer of 2006, I volunteered for the first time as an English teacher at the Chungba Primary School. What struck me immediately about the Chungba students was their work ethic. For them, receiving an education was a priceless opportunity and they cherished being at school. Now, five years after that first summer in Chungba, my connection to the Chungba students has only grown stronger. Through various fundraising projects I hope to provide them with opportunities which they more than deserve!
