The community in Kahela relies on the village well as the main source of potable water for both family as well as livestock consumption. Recent droughts have created a lack of potable water in the village, and women now must travel to the village outskirts and spend up to 4 hours a day collecting enough water for their family's daily use.

This project will construct 4 handpump wells in the village to provide families with convenient and reliable access to clean, drinking water. Each handpump will serve 20 Kahela families, reducing the time needed to collect water by at least 3 hours.

Kahela is a small agricultural village of approximately 170 families nestled in the foothills of Dungarpur district in Rajasthan, India. Families in Kahela live on approximately $1–$2 a day working as agricultural laborers on small farms in the area.

There are no plumbing or irrigation facilities in Kahela, and as a result families must rely on the monsoon rains for both irrigation and drinking water. Recent droughts have caused a severe problem in Kahela, and women who spent 3–4 hours a day collecting water from the village well are unable to obtain enough water for their family's daily use.

Direct Impact of Your Project

Provides 80 families with safe access to water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and washing. Reliable access to clean water will greatly increase the health and sanitation of the village. Availability of clean drinking water will decrease cases of dysentery, diarrhea, cholera, typhoid and other water-borne diseases. Families will also be able to use excess water to clean and wash regularly, improving the hygiene of the Kahela community.

Additionally, available water can be used for irrigation for winter crop cultivations. Increased agricultural production will provide the community with grain and fodder for cattle, resulting in increased income and food security.

Extended Impact on Your Partner Community

The ability to procure water in the village center will eliminate the need for women to spend several hours a day to obtain water from other water sources. Time saved can be used to for productive activities such as agricultural work and embroidery, allowing women to earn an extra income for their families.
