The village of Gamda Bramnia is facing a severe water crisis. Ongoing droughts have left the community’s 5,000 people with a seriously limited water supply. Although there was once a well available in the village, it is now dry. Families have no other option but to rely on a privately owned well located in the village’s outskirts. To gather sufficient water from this source, Gamda Bramnia’s women must make multiple trips back and forth from the well, forcing them to carry heavy pots for 3 to 4 hours each day.
This project will address the serious need for reliable water sources in Gamda Bramnia. It will fund the installation of two hand pumps, each of will provide 35 of the village’s families with access to a new, stable well. The wells will be constructed 1 to 2 kms away from each other so that their water can be used by as much of the Gamda Bramnia community as possible. Become the Citizen Philanthropist for this project and partner with Gamda Bramnia’s villagers to ensure they have two new sources of water for their daily use.
This project will fund the installment of two hand pumps so that two new wells will be available in Gamda Bramnia. To construct each well, a selected engineering team will drill approximately 45 to 55 meters into the ground to tap a water source and then attach a hand pump. The two hand pump wells will be placed at a distance from one another to maximize the number of families who will benefit from their installation.
The villagers of Gambda Bramnia are facing a serious water shortage. Their water supply currently depends on the limited monsoon rains and one privately-owned well. Recent droughts and shorter rainy seasons have worsened conditions in Gambda Bramnia. Now, gathering enough water for their families’ daily use has become a constant challenge for parents and forced many to sacrifice time they could be working or caring for their children so they can gather enough water to drink, cook, clean, and farm.
A qualified SEWA engineer will oversee a technical team from Dungarpur, a nearby town. This team will drill the two wells to tap their water sources and construct both hand pumps. Local workers from Gamda Bramnia will then be hired to complete the construction of the wells and install the hand pumps.

About Me: I am a 22 year old Marketing Analyst living in San Francisco. I graduated recently from the University of Pennsylvania where I majored in Diplomatic History. I just recently moved out to San Francisco and once I got settled was interested in volunteering or giving myself over to something "grander than myself," as they say and luckily found this project to help out Gamda village. This project interests me for a few reasons. One, I have always had a fondness for the land of India and its varied customs. Two, I believe that everyone in the world should have the right to basic necessity's, with water being one of the most, if not the most basic of all. Three, the SEWA project looks really great in that it is giving once undervalued women skills to empower them and allow them to provide for themselves and their families. I hope to use my social planning skill as well as my social graces to throw a few amazing parties to raise awareness for this project as well as other wonderful Citizen Effect projects around the world.
