Our mothers have already given us the greatest gift - an education. So for Mother's Day, tell your mother how much you appreciated it and donate $25 to 1Well's Hamare Bachche ("Our Children") project.
Hamare Bachche is a project run by the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA - www.SEWA.org) that provides education and trauma counseling for children that lost one or both parents in the 2002 communal riots in Ahmedabad, India.
Your $25 Mother's Day Gift will educate these children while also allowing their mothers to work and earn an income.
This program will provide the necessary funding for the education of the Hamare Bachche children as well as the following:
• trauma assessment and counseling
• school fees and supplies
• uniforms
• room and board (if necessary)
• health care services
• childcare services for younger children
• vocational guidance and training
• extracurricular activities and field trips
• special programs including summer camps, workshops, and picnics
• exam preparation and tutoring
The psychological trauma of the affected children requires special care and attention. The psychological trauma faced by the children requires special care and attention, as many of the children witnessed the death of one or both parents in the brutality of the communal riots. The violence and its aftermath greatly disrupted the lives of entire communities; families who lost their sole breadwinner struggled to make ends meet and children who lost both parents were placed in orphanages or with distant relatives. As a result, children were left out of school and unable to pay for their education costs.
Each Hamare Bachche child is assigned to at least one SEWA coordinator who counsels and supports the child and his or her family. SEWA teams who work specifically on the Hamare Bachche program visit the children at school every week. The team meets teachers and principals, and gets the report of the child’s progress.
This project will ensure regular meetings between teachers and guardians to monitor the children’s well-being and education. In addition, it will fund the training and salaries of teachers instructed to treat these children with patience and the utmost care. The project will also facilitate special tutoring and test prep to be given to impoverished Hamare Bachche students to inspire their confidence and improve their performances.
