Approximately one third of adults in southwest Detroit are unemployed. In today’s economy, it is essential for job seekers to be computer literate and to have access to technology. Most companies require applicants to apply for open jobs on their website or through an electronic resume submitted via email. Further, many entry-level jobs require the use of a computer and software in day-to-day activities.
Yet in southwest Detroit, where the residents are predominately Latino, the area is faced with an increasingly significant digital divide. Residents of the area are 20 percentage points less likely to have computer access at home, and this creates a serious barrier in today's digital world. This project helps to increase the employment potential of adults served through SER’s Center for Working Families by funding a resource lab within the center. Specifically this project funds the costs of four (4) new computers, access to career exploration software, and ESL learning software.
The lab will be primarily used by participants who do not have access to a computer and/or the internet at home and do not know how to effectively use computer technology. This project will provide the skills and resources necessary for these job seekers to successfully provide for themselves and for their families.
SER anticipates providing 300 residents per year with general access to the SER Career Development and Learning Lab, allowing them to create and print resumes, identify job openings, utilize career exploration and ESL/basic skills learning software, submit applications and check on their status, and to communicate via email with hiring managers. Residents will also have access to Work Based English as a Second Language learning software that builds reading comprehension in the context of the workplace, thereby improving the student’s employability.
The services offered by SER through its Center for Working Families program have a significant impact on the financial stability of families. During the past year alone, SER placed 80 participants into jobs, helped 84 others raise their net income by an average of over $1,000 per year, helped 89 raise their net worth by an average of $4,000, and assisted over 150 participants in completing an occupational skills training program.
The participants currently served through SER’s CWF have access to a computer lab and software. Their computer labs serve over 70 people on a daily basis and are at capacity. SER estimates that approximately 80% of job openings require the use of a computer when applying and that a similar percentage of jobs require computer knowledge to fulfill duties.
SER will monitor the impact of the Lab by tracking daily computer usage. Further, SER will track the employment and financial outcomes for all of the participants enrolled into CWF.
