Rates of crime are high in the Chadsey-Condon neighborhood. In recent years the community has struggled not only with larger, citywide issues of crime, vacant housing and recession, but against a larger enemy threatening to prolong these harmful epidemics: apathy. Residents there have organized and are working together to identify issues they can tackle to improve the safety in their neighborhood.
This project takes an active approach to deterring home robberies and other criminal activities that occur on neighborhood streets by installing porch light fixtures for 50 households. The project will directly impact the safety of the neighborhood by illuminating streets while empowering residents with the knowledge they need to take ownership of their neighborhood, and engaging them to work together with their neighbors to improve conditions and create a safer neighborhood environment for themselves and their families.
This project funds the purchase of 50 porch light fixtures, and covers the cost of installation of the unit on the homes.
ACCESS has been actively engaged in the Chadsey-Condon Neighborhood for the last 3 years. The Organization works to organize residents with the goal of enhancing residents’ capacity, building bridges between different races and ethnic groups in the neighborhood, and engaging youth and adult residents in active projects that improve their neighborhood.
The Safety Committee of the Chadsey-Condon Community Organization will organize residents to identify 50 homes that will benefit from the installation of porch lights. In addition to the installation of lights, the committee in partnership with the Detroit Police Department will work with residents, educating them on strategies that promote safer neighborhoods in coordination with their neighbors, to maximize the safety benefit of installing porch lights.
The Chadsey-Condon Community Organization was created as a result of the Skillman Foundation's Good Neighborhoods Initative. The organization is resident & stakeholder driven. There is a robust governance board of 22 members that includes representatives from various neighborhood enclaves throughout the Chadsey Condon area.
