The HPV virus is the primary cause of cervical and anal cancer in the United States. HPV is also the most common sexually transmitted infection with more than 40 HPV types that can infect males and females. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it.
The Gardasil Vaccine is FDA approved to be 90-100% effective in preventing the 4 main types of HPV virus. It provides future protection against not only HPV infection but anal and cervical cancer.
Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by anal cancer in the United States with likelihood of developing anal cancer 17 times higher than the general population. This project funds a course of preventative vaccinations to 10 male youth classified as high risk. These male youth are homeless or runaways. A course of three Gardasil vaccinations provides protection from the virus for the young man, and also therefore also protects his partners from infection.
This project will fund the vaccination of Men who have sex with Men in Detroit with the 3 doses required of the Gardasil vaccine at a cost of $390.43 per patient, $130.14 per dose.
HIV positive MSM have rates of anal cancer 40 times the national average. MSM with HIV are more likely to develop severe cases that are much harder to treat.
In the United States, African American MSM are disproportionately represented in the HIV epidemic. The numbers are staggering and heartbreaking.
Despite representing only 14% of the US population, African Americans represent 44% of all new infections. In 2009 black MSM represented 73% of the new infections among black men and 37% of new infections among MSM. New HIV infections among young black MSM increased by 48% from 2006-2009.
Because of the severity of the disproportionate impact of HIV on this population, as well as the exponential increase in anal cancers among HIV positive MSM, early vaccination in this population is critical to curbing cancer related deaths and skyrocketing future health care costs.
ACCESS has extensive experience with vaccinations and provides a comprehensive list of vaccines through our teen health program including HPV.
To deliver these vaccinations, ACCESS will partner with Ruth Ellis Center, the only mission specific agency in the Midwest dedicated to LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-atractional, Transgender and Questioning) youth. Through this partnership, ACCESS will deliver the course of vaccinations to high risk runaway/homeless youth.
Young MSM may identify as gay, bi, questioning or same gender loving. ACCESS will screen participants and identify eligibility based on risk behavior not social identity or community affiliation.
