The Well Mother, Well Baby Program aims to educate young mothers (and fathers if they choose to participate) on the healthy habits necessary to raise their children well and become strong, confident parents. The 10 week program covers topics such as the importance of breast feeding, stress management, parenting, infant development, and child safety.
At the culmination of the program there is a baby shower. For many of the students is their only opportunity to attain the essential items needed for their infants.
The project funds educational workshop materials and essential baby items provided to the young mother during the Baby Shower which is held at the end of the 10 week education program.
This project funds the following items for one young mother:
Workshop materials
Class Manual- $35
Stress Journal- $10
Essential items for baby to:
Eat: Bottles- $15
Sleep: Pack n Play with Bassinet- $100
Live: Diapers- $20, Changing pad-$20, Baby bathtub - $20, Stroller- $60
For many girls growing up in low-income environments, motherhood arrives too soon.
Teen pregnancy is closely related to school dropout rates, severely limiting future opportunities for these young women.
Children of teen mothers have lower birth weights, are at greater risk of childhood illness and lack of educational opportunities than their peers.
Finally, the problem is self-perpetuating, with daughters of teen mothers more likely to become teen mothers themselves.
The Well Mother, Well Baby Program Coordinator will use the funds raised to purchase the educational materials and baby items. The educational items will be distributed at the first workshop while the baby items will be given at baby shower.
