Dreams for Kids's Extreme Recess Program gives DC area youth with physical and developmental challenges the opportunity to participate in sports, often for the very first time. Adaptive sporting events from snow and water-skiing, to martial arts and baseball, allow youth to realize a physical potential previously unimagined while having the time of their life!
Participating in sports with peers increases and reinforces a child’s positive belief in their own abilities, building immeasurable confidence and self-esteem. At a base level, recreational activities are vital to a child’s health. Extreme Recess events help to improve respiratory capacity, circulation, heart rate, muscle tone, and, consequently, their quality of life.
This project allows one youth and his or her family to participate in a year of Extreme Recess programs, including up to 10 different adaptive sports clinics with local DC-area professional athletics teams. Support this project, and empower youth with disabilities the confidence, self-respect, and motivation to seize each and every day.
All of the Extreme Recess clinics are free of charge to participating youth and their families, and it costs Dreams for Kids about $25 for a child to complete one Extreme Recess clinic. Your support will allow one youth with disabilities to participate in adaptive sports programs in the Washington DC-area with no cost.
Funds will specially be used to rent venue spaces, train volunteers, provide transportation, supply equipment (e.g. balls, water wheelchairs) and provide refreshments (e.g. water, snacks).
Below are the Extreme Recess clinics this year:
-Hockey
-Soccer
-Volleyball
-Basketball (2 with Washington Wizards & Mystics)
-Sailing
-Lacrosse
-Baseball
-Waterskiing
-Tennis
-Golf (4)
-White House tour
-Football
There are over 13,000 young people with disabilities living in DC and similar numbers in surrounding communities. Youth who are disabled encounter challenges in their everyday life and Extreme Recess provides opportunities to defy their disabilities. These programs create hope that helps youth to overcome any challenges in their life with the confidence that they can succeed. Extreme Recess will ultimately address the need for attention and normalcy towards youth who are disabled are without sports.
Extreme Recess clinics are one day events, in which Dreams for Kids Team members and volunteers from the community will assist participants in adaptive sports. Physical work, team work, and emotional support are all critical to the success for each individual in the activities.
