Saludos de Subtanjalla, Provincia Ica, Perú! So much progress has been made in the past year since my last visit to the San Antonio School and Youth Outreach Center, what was only sand before is now the beginnings of a permanent school, medical clinic and youth outreach facility. Primary water, sewer and electrical grids have been laid, and more than 60 homes have been built in the urbanization. And the equipment for the Multipurpose Classroom has been purchased and en route from Spain! The container – filled with donated humanitarian aid and the classroom equipment – set sail on June 8th, and is due to arrive in Peru early July. From there, it will be offloaded in Callao and transported to Subtanjalla to be installed in the temporary center. With construction moving forward, the new building should be completed in 3-4 months, and the kitchen equipment will be moved to its permanent home, to serve both the Youth Outreach Center children and the School’s student population – more than 150 people this year and growing in 2011!
Last week, a group of 8 volunteer dental students from the University of Tennessee participated in a dental care campaign that covered 700km in 5 provinces, distributed 286 toothbrushes and provided free care to 550 patients at Coprodeli Centers. In Subtanjalla, 80 students received fluoride treatments, fillings as needed, and a few parents from the community came to have their teeth looked at. Tremendous day, and I can’t wait to visit again and see the new San Antonio School & Youth Outreach Center running at full capacity.
Viva Perú,
Alycia.
