Kutch is the driest district in Gujarat. Koravandh is a remote village, 4 kilometers from Taluka town center down an unfinished road. The climate is inhospitable - very cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. The monsoon rains are heavy but sporadic.
There is no source of clean water in the village. Water tanks visit every few days, but villagers have insufficient storage facilities for the water. When they run out of clean water villagers drink from the dam. Water borne diseases such as cholera, stone and other skin diseases are common.
This project funds the materials and construction of a rainwater harvesting system and 40,000 litre storage tank. When full to the top, this tank will provide a clean source of water for 5 months. This will improve the health of the villagers, increase school attendance and allow the women to work hence increasing income.
The water tank will be constructed in a communal place (e.g. by the school) and will be used by all villagers.
By contructing this water tank, the villagers can store the rain water and they can use it at the time of requirement. It will be benefitiary for the women of the village as they donot have to go far from the village to get drinking water. And also it will stop the diseases like cholera, stone and other skin diseases. After getting the water tank the villagers will be able to increase their income and increase school attendance
SEWA will source the required materials and specialist labor and oversee the construction. The villagers will also participate in construction and also be responsible for the maintenance of the tank.
