The remote village of Haji Bhachudiwandh does not have access to the resources to meet its members’ basic needs. Currently, the village faces its greatest challenges as a result of having an inadequate water supply and no electricity.
Currently, the community's drinking water is collected from monsoon rains and government water tankard vehicles that visit the village once a week. The lack of water for washing and cleaning has created serious health and hygiene issues among the village’s families and resulted in their children being barred from attending the local school. The absence of electricity further compounds these issues. Adults’ work hours are restricted to the hours when sufficient sunlight is available and the entire community is left vulnerable to wild animals and harmful insects.
This project will ensure that Haji Bhachudiwanh is equipped with the resources to address both of these critical needs. It will provide the village’s families with three 10,000 L water tanks that will allow them to capture and store enough clean water to benefit the entire village. In addition, this project will also ensure that the community is protected from the dangers of the dark by supplying it with three solar lights.
This project will enable the construction of 3 rainwater harvesting tanks and 3 community solar lights. Each water tank will have a capacity of 10,000 liters and be equipped with a handpump and a man-hole cover that will ensure stored water is not contaminated by dirt, dust, and other debris. The three solar lights will be placed so as to ensure that all 35 households have access to a clean and renewable source of light. Each solar light is approximately 7 feet tall, and includes a 3'x3' solar panel that is connected to top of the lamp post. The lights will be able to provide the community with light in the night and will recharge during the day.
Haji Bhachudiwandh does not have adequate access to safe drinking water or electricity. Villagers are currently forced to depend on infrequent visits from government tankard vehicles and the monsoon rains to collect their water. However, even the water collected by these means threatens the villagers in the form of pollutants and contamination. In addition, the lack of electricity forces families to scavenge for energy sources in the form of wood. The effort required to burn this fuel contributes to deforestation around the village and an increase in carbon emissions.
The construction of the water tanks and solar lights will provide employment to local engineers, masons, and other construction workers from the village and its surrounding area. Each water tank will be constructed with reinforced concrete cement. Materials for the solar lights are purchased through a local vendor in Gujarat, India. A SEWA engineer will construct and assemble the lights, and teach the community the methods to properly maintain and repair them.

About Me: Hello! I'm so excited to start my first Citizen Effect Project. Volunteering is something that has always been very important to me. I believe that the world would be a better place if everyone contributed to making a difference. I believe volunteering our time and donating what we can afford makes us better people. I'm hopeful that together with my friends and family, and their friends and family, we can help the village of Haji Bhachudiwandh. And that very soon, the local children will know that a group of strangers cares about them. Thank you for taking this journey with me! Mandy
