Peru’s southern provinces of Cañete and Chincha are continuing to recover from a 2007 earthquake that devastated the regions and left the majority of their residents impoverished. This project will be part of a larger effort to provide basic primary health care to twelve of the provinces’ districts through mobile medical outreach campaigns. It will specifically fund the purchase of one lot of medicine that will be used in 200 medical campaigns over the course of a year. This lot will include various antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, topical treatments, and vaccines among other medications. They will be used to treat at least 3,133 patients coping with common conditions such as upper respiratory infections, open sores or wounds, hypertension, bacterial and fungal infections, and asthma. For many of this project's beneficiaries, the medicine they are prescribed will be part of their first experience receiving medical care.
Become the Citizen Philanthropist for this project and ensure the residents of Chincha and Cañete provinces have access to the medicine they need to improve their quality of life.
The one lot of medicine will be used in 200 medical outreach campaigns to treat patients with basic conditions and vaccinate them against preventable diseases. Of the 25,080 direct estimated beneficiaries of the campaigns, these lots will be used to allow 3,133 people to recover and return to their normal level of function. The medicine will be prescribed by a team of medical personnel including a general doctor, obstetrician, dentist, pharmacist and topical/triage nurse who will make monthly visits to select public sites. This medicine will serve as incentive for impoverished residents to return to the outreach campaigns where they will receive both individualized care and educational workshops.
In the shantytowns and earthquake-affected districts of Chincha and Cañete, access to primary medical care is incredibly limited. The few medical facilities available are often at a distance that suffering patients cannot reach. As a result, many residents fall victim to preventable diseases or easily treatable conditions. Without the medicine that could improve their lives, these individuals are unable to recover and return to the activities they depend on to support themselves and their families.
The one lot of medicine will be purchased in bulk and safely stored at the Chincha Baja Medical Center. They will then be distributed to the professionals staffing the campaigns. The lot will be divided and provided daily to the staff according to the estimated number of attendees at a campaign. When prescribed, the medications will be used to treat common conditions including fungal and bacterial skin infections, diarrhea, gastrointestinal illnesses, and asthma and to vaccinate against preventable diseases.
