In Kunjrao women work in the local tobacco fields. There is often insufficient income to stop working when babies are born. Instead women either take the children to work (risking their health) or older daughters will drop out of school to look after their siblings.
This project funds a Childcare Center for one year. This will provide quality education, hot nutritious meals as well as routine health checkups for newborns and children up to age of 6. The center enables to children to grow and develop in a healthy environment, teaching them skills, and educating them through fun activities and games. These methods will be implemented with the main aim of advocating children to continue and/or remain in school by supporting the holistic development of children and providing them with more opportunities in the future.
The center conduct the checkups for the children, provide them with meals, stationary, books etc. and will employ teachers to teach and take care of the children.
The children will be monitored by the center, and will be checked from time to time for their body weight, body height and any vaccinations that have been taken or will require to be taken; therefore, as per any health issues, the center will ensure that through nutritious food and checkups, the children will be taken care of.
Achieving agreement for a childcare center is hard as it requires villagers to commit funds before the benefits are clear. As a result, SEWA often sources seed funding for the first year of a center to demonstrate the benefits to the community. Benefits from previous childcare centers have been clear. Children are healthier and have better educational outcomes. The aim is that in the following years the community will have seen the benefit of the center and continue to fund it themselves. This outcome has been seen in a number of other villages.
SEWA will oversee the set up of the center. Once it is operational, the center will develop a schedule as per when they should conduct the checkups for the children. As per the education aspect, the teachers will form a committee and train newcomers applying for the job.
