Guher is an agricultural village in a dry and semi-arid region of Gujarat, India. The village not only lacks basic means of harvesting rainwater for drinking and agriculture, but also lacks basic sanitation facilities. The community requires water and sanitation infrastructure to grow and develop.
CareerBuilder.com's project will protect the health of Guher residents, make their village a more livable place, and decrease their overall water scarcity.
This project will construct five roof rainwater harvesting systems underground rainwater harvesting tanks and four toilet facilities.
Each roof rainwater harvesting unit includes an open gully that is attached to the four corners of the roof of a village house, and empties into a 5,000 liter capacity underground tank via a closed pipe. The reinforced cement tank will also include a handpump for easy water procurement.
Each indoor sanitation facility will be constructed with a private, flush-latrine. Sanitation facilities will also be connected to a soak pit, or sustainable septic tank, for waste treatment.
Guher does not have plumbing, irrigation, or other infrastructure neccessary to provide community members with reliable access to water. Water used for drinking, cooking, agriculture, and cleaning rely on the monsoon rains. As a result, recent droughts and increasingly-shorter monsoon season have created a water shortage problem for the Guher community.
The lack of water greatly contributes to the health and sanitation problem. Community members are forced to walk to the village outskirts to relieve themselves in effort to avoid contaminating water sources, and children often have to leave class due to the school’s lack of sanitation facilities. This lack of basic sanitation has dramatically increased the infection rate of disease throughout the village, in addition to affecting the productivity of adults and schooling of children in the community.
A SEWA engineer will oversee the construction, and arrange the purchase and transportation of materials from local vendors. Workers from Guher village and the surrounding area will be hired to complete the construction and masonry for each project.
