Obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are preventable diseases that are among the most harmful and widespread in America. The good news is that with small changes to behaviors they can be prevented.
Microclinic International worked with Bell County residents to develop a 10 month program to help people make small but lasting changes to their behaviors. This program is combined with changes to the local environment that aid a healthy lifestyle - for example, establishing a farmers market and building an exercise trail.
Schools are encouraged to get involved in the program through a grant system. Schools can apply for grants of between $3,000 and $5,000 that provide seed funding to support one initiative. This initiative must support healthy eating and/or physical fitness.
This project provides the money for one grant. In previous years these grants have funded initiatives such as school gardens and running tracks.
Grant applications are requested in the fall. The winning grants are chosen by a grant committee that includes health and fitness experts. Grants are awarded in the winter and need to be implemented during the school year. Funds are disbursed as two lump sums with the second amount conditional on sufficient progress having been made. If the winning grant is for less than $5,000, the remaining sum will be held in a fund used for future grants.
Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans and obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are a serious health concern that cost the US economy one trillion dollars a year.
Involvement of schools and children in the program is key. The earlier people can develop healthy eating and exercise habits the better.
The program is run by Microclinic International (http://microclinics.org/) in partnership with the Bell County and Cumberland Valley Health Departments (http://www.cvdhd.org/) and the school systems of Pineville, Middlesborough and Bell County.
