Winning Online Competitions: A Coalition of the Giving

by Brett W. on March 09, 2010

Below is a blog article by Citizen Effect Founder & CEO Dan Morrison.  It was featured today as a guest post on Geoff Livingston's blog.

Philanthropy competitions are the new fad and mode for giving away millions of dollars to innovative organizations trying to save the world. Last year the Chase Giving Challenge gave away $5 million to 100 nonprofits and this year Pepsi allocated $20 million of its Super Bowl ad budget to launch its Pepsi Refresh Project that is giving away a total of $1.2 million a month to innovative ideas that will save the world.

While most of you have never heard of Scott Beale and Atlas Corp. you need to for two reasons. Atlas Corp is creating a new spin on the Peace Corp that will benefit your organization, and Scott is kicking your butts in these online giving competitions.

Kick It Up! Gives Girls Confidence and a Career

by Laura G. on March 04, 2010

Billions of people around the world are gearing up to watch the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Thanks to Citizen Effect's new field partner, Global Girl Media, you can watch some truly inspiring coverage of the matches.

Kick it Up! is a new program designed to kick start the journalism careers of South African girls.  It is extremely difficult for women to enter a male-dominated industry like sports journalism. For girls in Soweto, South Africa it is next to impossible thanks to gang violence, drug use and disease. Kick it Up! was created to give these girls a chance.

Here’s how it works:  Global Girl Media will provide hands-on broadcast journalism training for 15-20 year-old girls selected for the program. Then the girls will travel to the World Cup and act as reporters in the field. Kick It Up! gives girl power a whole new meaning . Play a part in giving these underprivileged young women self-confidence that will last a lifetime. Be a Citizen Philanthropist for a Kick it Up! project or make a donation today.

Nine New Year's Resolutions Worth Keeping

by Brett W. on February 19, 2010

Nine New Year's Resolutions Worth Keeping

Why is that so many of our New Year's resolutions never even see the light of February?

Maybe it's because our resolutions are lonely undertakings.  Or, perhaps, it's easy for us to lose inspiration and quickly forget about our plans altogether.  It could just be we don't have the commitment we thought we had.

If your New Year's resolution is stalled, we have the cure!

The solution is simple: match your 2010 resolution with a great cause. By transforming your goal into a meaningful effort that unites the people around you, you will ensure that this year, your resolution will become a reality!

Guest Blog Post – What Goes Around Comes Around

by Brett W. on February 19, 2010

 What goes around comes around,

so what are you giving today?

Generosity is contagious. It brings with it the energy of abundance, kindness, peace and love. Giving is a practice that in and of itself can completely transform your life. When we become givers we automatically become receivers in multiple ways. If you're not sure what will happen, try it and you will be amazed. On a very basic energetic level several things happen when we give.

#1 We feel good. Plain and simple, it feels good to give to others. It doesn’t matter whether you give your time, money, or words of kindness, giving sets off good feelings when the giving comes from your heart.

Thinking of becoming a Citizen Philanthropist? Do it. Just say Yes!

by Hatef Y. on February 12, 2010

Little did I know when I said Yes! to becoming a Citizen Philanthropist in August of 2008 that it would actually lead me to the village one year later.  It was such a great experience and continues to be.  How did it all start? I am fortunate to live here in Washington, DC and attended the Citizen Effect Launch Party to meet other like-minded folks and learn more about what Citizen Effect does for people in countries with basic infrastructure needs. I was touched by the founder & CEO, Dan Morrison’s story about how he got involved and how Citizen Effect began.  I knew very early on that this was something I wanted to do and had to get involved in.

Celebrate MLK Holiday as a day of service - with Citizen Effect

by Hatef Y. on January 18, 2010

Today, the nation celebrates and honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. For many of us, that means a day on, not a day off-- volunteering and participating in community events. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a national day of service to encourage volunteering and community involvement. Dr. King emphasized the power of service toward meeting many of the challenges we face today: poverty, economic insecurity, hunger, illiteracy and environmental threats.
