PROJECT SUMMARY
Since 2007, the Peruvian district of Subtanjalla has struggled to recover from a major earthquake that devastated its population and resources. As a shantytown, the majority of Subtanjalla’s buildings before the earthquake were constructed of adobe and temporary materials and were utterly destroyed by the disaster. Efforts to rebuild the district have proven slow and left Subtanjalla’s residents homeless without access to the resources to meet their basic needs. These conditions have been particularly detrimental to the district’s children who have largely been unable to attend school since the earthquake. To assist Subtanjalla’s recovery, this project will fully equip one classroom in Coprodeli’s San Antonio Education Center. The center was originally opened in 2009 and currently has 300 students attending pre-kindergarten through third grade. All classes continue to meet in temporary classrooms with provisional furniture. By fully equipping one classroom, this will ensure that 25 primary level students will be able to return to school, many for the first time since the earthquake. The project will specifically equip an empty classroom with new tables, chairs, bookshelves, whiteboards, teaching materials and basic Peruvian textbook sets.
