Update on your project in South Africa

We've recieved an update from students of the Durban University of Technology working in collaboration with Mpilonhle to develop art programs in South Africa.

"We are three Durban University of Technology graphic design students that are lead by professor Kate Wells, we are launching, leading and developing levels of visual communication, and helping build skills in art and design amongst learners at four rural schools in northern KwaZulu- Natal. This will be achieved with the collaboration of Mpilonhle, Disturbance design and East Coast architects"

Bringing long-term benefits to 4 high schools through ongoing art programs

Congratulations on fully funding your project.

Citizen Effect has transferred the money you raised to the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, our field partner in South Africa, to start your project.

The funds raised will bring arts programs to 4 high schools - Silethukukhanya, Madwaleni, Masibonisane and Malabela. The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project are planning to start this project in January 2012 and complete it in January 2013. They will send an update while the project is underway and another when it is complete.

Artists for Africa Movie Night was a Success!!!

The Artists for Africa Movie Night and Raffle was a complete success!! Social Action Squad would like to express their gratitude to all who came and contributed.

We have raised a total of $2,649 which will be matched up to $5,000 by philantropist Vicky Booth!

We were blown away by turn out (many of our guests had to sit on the floor because we did not have enough seats). It was a very intimate experience and "War Dance" definitely resonated with people helping them to see the need for arts education in Africa.

Thank you to The Center for Living Peace for providing us with the resources to make this event possible and to Nicole Schneidman from Citizen Effect for guiding us along the way!!

Artists for Africa Movie Night is Finally Here!!

The Artist for Africa Movie Night and Raffle is only a few hours away!! We are so excited for this event and appreciate all the support that we have gotten from Center for Living Peace, Citizen Effect, and OCHSA. Social Action Squad has grown and learned so much from this event and we are so grateful for all of the giving spirit that we have witnessed the last few days.

The Big Day is Almost Here!!

The Movie night is two days away!!

Thank you to those that have donated! Continue to contribute so that we can reach our $5,000 goal.

Because of issues with ticket sales, the dinner has been cancelled and we will only be selling tickets for the Movie night.

Tickets are $10 and the even will start at 6:30pm

Additionally, because of technogolical issues the skype in session with Lorrie Fair has been cancelled.

Arists for Africa Movie Night and Raffle!!

As the big day of Social Action Squad's Artist for Africa Movie Night and Raffle come closer, make sure to purchase your tickets for the big event!!

Tickets can be purchased at the OCHSA box office.

Tickets are $20 including the dinner which wil start at 5:30pm and $10 for the movie which starts at 6:30pm.

The event will take place at OCHSA's Margaret A. Webb Theatre Center for the Arts. 801 N. Main Street, Santa Ana, CA 92701

The movie night will feature the documentary "War Dance," which follows the journey of three Ugandan former child soldiers participating in the National Music Competition.

Former U.S. national team soccer player, Lorrie Fair, who currently heads CTAOP’s arts education program in South Africa will Skype in during the event. There will also be a Q&A session with CTAOP executive director Ashlee Irish.

There will a raffle including big ticket items and gift baskets.

Get Out the Popcorn!

Hey everyone!

After much debate, we have chosen the movie for our May 27th Artists for Africa Movie Night and Raffle! We are excited to be showing:

"War Dance"

It's a documentary directed by Sean Fine and Andrea Nix. This inspirational movie follows refugee children in the northern region of Uganda, where violence runs rampant. Amidst the horrors of war, the children of the Patongo School courageously pour their hearts and souls into the national music competition. The children, often former child soldiers or sex slaves, dance to win this competition and rebuild the lives that were taken from them.

In other news, we have secured some grant money for the event! The Center for Living Peace, an Orange County nonprofit organization, has chosen us for a $1,125 grant that will cover the venue cost. A very special thanks to Center for Living Peace for choosing us and supporting us!
