Architecture for Humanity - Rebuilding in Tohoku

In March, the Citizen Effect community raised $100,000 for the Red Cross's Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami effort. Eric and Wendy Schmidt matched it dollar for dollar and we sent the Red Cross $200,000. But you were not done and kept fundraising and giving until we had another $133,558. So we set out to find the best partner to give it to and decided Architecture for Humanity was doing amazing work of mobilizing the local community to help rebuild.

Citizen Effect's donation to Architecture for Humanity will help fund a new program called "Build Back a Better Tohoku". We will be working with Architecture for Humanity to select specific grants to fund that enable reconstruction efforts in the hardest hit areas of the Tohoku region. Citizen Effect is adding partners to its Japan Earthquake Relief Fund

On March 12, 2011, Citizen Effect launched its Japan Earthquake Relief Fund and announced Eric and Wendy Schmidt would be matching the first $100,000 in donations to support the Red Cross. The outpouring of support has been amazing. Eric and Wendy's challenge was met before noon on March 17th and Citizen Effect is sending $200,000 to the Red Cross's relief efforts in Japan.

We have had numerous requests to support additonal organizations through Citizen Effect's Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. So we are. We're in the process of actively vetting new field partners working on the ground in Japan, and plan on announcing our additional partners soon. What does this mean for our Citizen Philanthropists? Anyone interested in funding a Japan Earthquake Relief Fund project through Citizen Effect can expect a select group of trusted field partners to choose from.

Thank You for the Amazing Support

Dear Supporters of Citizen Effect's Japan Earthquake Relief Fund,

We have all watched what is happening in Japan since the Earthquake last Friday. The enormity of the damage is startling. There is one amazing thing that keeps us all optimistic that we will get past this disaster and that is the empathy and outpouring of support shown by all of you.

We had the idea on Saturday to launch a Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, and Eric and Wendy Schmidt supported us by pledging to match the first $100,000 donated. It is only Thursday and we are already hit our goal. Your support is humbling.

Our work is not done, so we are going to continue raising money for this past $100,000 so people can continue to donate. We already have 6 people committed to raise an additional $45,000 and we are confimring 16 more. Want to join them? Email Nicole at nicole@citizeneffect.org and she will get you started.

We all cannot thank Eric and Wendy enough for their generous support for giving $100,000 to this effort. Japan is now 13 feet closer to the United States

Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake was so powerful that it actually widened Japan. While parts of the country barely moved, other regions are now 13 feet closer to the United States.

American Red Cross Responds to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami

Press Release from the American Red Cross regarding their efforts to assist the people of Japan.

WASHINGTON, Friday, March 11, 2011 - The American Red Cross stands ready and willing to assist following a magnitude 8.9 earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami that affected other countries in the Pacific region.

The Japanese Red Cross Society has extraordinary disaster response capabilities, and has mobilized eleven teams to heavily-damaged communities to provide assessments and first aid and prepare to supply emotional support and relief. The American Red Cross is in communication through its global partners with the Pacific nations that sustained the most damage, and stands ready to provide assistance as needed. To date, the Red Cross has not received any requests for blood from the Japanese Red Cross, the Japanese government or the U.S. State Department.
