Project Update: Jan 2011 Field Report

Ten students received their scholarships, thanks to Ed H. and Children of Vietnam!

Citizen Effect and Children of Vietnam are elated to announce that on November 15, 2010, ten students attending the Tay Son Middle School were awarded scholarships from Citizen Philanthropist Ed H! While the weather may have been rainy (forcing the planned outdoor ceremony to move indoors), moods were high as two of the school's vice principals congratulated the students for their hard work and success.

All of the children receiving scholarships come from poor homes and difficult circumstances, and may not have been able to continue their education without this help. Each child received a $52 scholarship that will pay for school fees, uniforms, books, pencils and notebooks. This scholarship is very much appreciated by the children and their families. Thanks to the hard work of Ed H. and Children of Vietnam, the following children now have the chance for a brighter future:

Bio: The middle child of three, Tin, his parents and siblings live with Tin's grandparents, as Tin's father does not earn enough as a fisherman to both pay his family's medical bills and buy a house. Thanks to the scholarship, Tin can continue his education and his family will be less hard pressed to make ends meet each month.

Project Update: Field Project from August 2010

Project Update as reported by Children of Vietnam Correspondent Nancy Letteri:

Children of Vietnam (COV) is very grateful for Ed Herold's effort in raising the funds to give 10 children 4-year scholarships to attend school!

The first day of school for the students in the Danang region and the Tay Son Secondary School is September 5th. The day starts with an opening ceremony where all the students attend dressed in their uniforms. Both the principal and the teachers address the student body to encourage the students to study well in the upcoming academic year. Two weeks prior to the first day of school, students participate in an orientation period on assigned days. In these two weeks they get familiar with the classroom and teachers as well as preparing their books, putting covers on them, and cleaning the classroom.

Currently, Children of Vietnam staff is working with the Tay Son School staff to identify the 10 students who will receive the 4-year scholarships. The children will be pleased to hear that this gift comes from a citizen of the United States. Once selected, COV information about these students and photos will be provided. Thank you Mr. Herold!
